Effective immediately, all new content in the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) is now freely available, and previously published material will be available March 1, 2020. Joule™, a CMA company that publishes CMAJ, made the decision to remove the paywall, allowing everyone to freely access evidence-based content relevant to the health of Canadians and people around the world.
Until now, research articles, guidelines, editorials and news were freely available, but all other material was placed behind a paywall for a year. This is no longer the case.
For over 100 years, CMAJ, Canada’s major medical journal, has been recognized for its health research, opinions and reporting. It will continue to do so under the helm of its new editor-in-chief, Dr. Andreas Laupacis.
Dr. Laupacis says the removal of the paywall will support his vision of making the journal a go-to space for debate and dialogue and expanding the commentary section to tackle important issues in health care.
“It’s going to make it much easier for me (as editor-in-chief) to approach people with expertise to write commentaries for us because I know they’ll be freely available to everybody, not just in Canada, but around the world,” says Dr. Laupacis.
CMA members and subscribers will continue to receive the monthly printed edition of CMAJ.
