Alyssa Marie Gerharter and Daniel James Cohn were married Sept. 28 at Sound River Studios, an events space in Long Island City, Queens. Christopher A. Bruffee, a friend of the couple who is a Universal Life minister, officiated in a ceremony incorporating Jewish elements.
The bride, 28, is a software developer in the Manhattan office of Google. Until recently she was a hip-hop choreographer for DanceWorks New York City, a dance company based in Astoria, Queens, providing a postgraduate performance outlet for advanced and technically trained dancers. She graduated with all university honors from Carnegie Mellon University.
She is the daughter of Darla J. H. Gerharter and David M. Gerharter of Burbank, Calif. The bride’s father is the director of operations for transit advertising in Burbank at Circle Graphics, a grand format printing company based in Longmont, Colo. Her mother is a special-education teacher at Thomas Jefferson Elementary in Burbank.
Mr. Cohn, 33, is the partnerships lead for research and innovation at the International Rescue Committee, a humanitarian aid and relief organization based in Manhattan. He is also the M.C. and tenor saxophonist for FutureType, a Brooklyn-based electro funk band that most recently released the EP recording “Darktime.” He graduated cum laude from George Washington University, and received two master’s degrees, one in international affairs from Columbia and another, cum laude, in public affairs from Institut d’études Politiques de Paris in France.
He is the son of Elizabeth E. Gibbons of Burlington, Vt., and Douglas P. Cohn of Kensington, Md., and the stepson of Judith R. Chalmer of Burlington. The groom’s mother is a senior trade marketing manager in Waterbury, Vt., at Keurig Dr Pepper, producer and distributor of beverages. His father has a private family law practice in Bethesda, Md. The groom’s stepmother retired as the executive director at VSA Vermont, an organization in Essex Junction, Vt., now called Inclusive Arts Vermont, that helps children and adults with disabilities participate in the arts. She is on the board of the Vermont Humanities Council in Montpelier, Vt.
The couple were introduced in 2017 through the League dating app, and a week later when they met at a dive bar in Greenwich Village in Manhattan, Ms. Gerharter swept Mr. Cohn off his feet when she told him she was into high fantasy novels, as well as hip-hop music and politics. Before the date ended she agreed to see “La Traviata” with him at the Metropolitan Opera a couple of days later, her first opera ever.
