Dr. Birnbaum and Mr. Frankel, who never met while at Colgate, were introduced in 2018 through the dating app Hinge. In May 2019 he proposed outside her maternal grandparents’ house in Mamaroneck, N.Y., while fellow alumni from the Colgate 13, an all-male collegiate a cappella group to which he once belonged, sang backup. Later, after she said “yes,” Mr. Frankel joined them in a rendition of “My Girl.”
