Yang & Collaborators Building Spatiotemporal Platform To Support COVID-19 Response
Chaowei Yang, Professor, Director, NSF Spatiotemporal Innovation Center, Geography and Geoinformation Science, is building a spatiotemporal platform to support rapid response to COVID-19. This project is a collaboration with the Center for Geographical Analysis at Harvard University.
Specifically, Yang and his collaborators are building and enriching a comprehensive data repository of virus cases, associated social and natural information from different resources, such as authoritative reports, news releases, Earth observation, and social media for sustainable archive.
The researchers are also sharing their data with research communities through smart data discovery capabilities for easy access.
They are utilizing the spatiotemporal computing infrastructure built previously to assist with the computing and processing needs of researchers for studying COVID-19 with online collaboration.
Further, Yang and his collaborators are utilizing spatiotemporal tools developed in the center and integrating them into easy-to-use workflows to assist researchers, in collaboration with public health experts, to identify case trajectories, rebuild traces, and forecast future trends, for reproducible and replicable research. They are also conducting spatiotemporal analyses to mine patterns and relations with social and natural factors for community response and preparedness.
Yang received $99,956 from the National Science Foundation for this project. Funding began in June 2020 and will conclude in late May 2021.
