At nearly $500 for the salad bowl, you’d think Alice Waters would handpick and rinse the lettuces for you herself. But no, she only inspired the new bowl for the Permanent Collection online shop. It’s a beautiful piece, fairly shallow and 13 1/4 inches across, with an alluring natural pattern. Ms. Waters selected redwood for the material because it’s light in weight and also because she has an affinity for the trees, one of which is in her backyard. The shape of the bowl is based on a ceramic one that she uses at home and is lathe-turned by Bruce Mitchell, an artisan California woodworker. Five percent of the price is donated to Ms. Waters’s Edible Schoolyard Project.
