It may be the best art deal in town. The New York Academy of Art held its annual Tribeca Ball on April 4, where established collectors got to roam the art studios upstairs and buy work from 100 current students. Afterward, guests sat down for a filet mignon dinner that honored Amy Sherald, the figurative painter best known for her official portrait of Michelle Obama.
Student works were also on display at the Fashion Scholarship Fund’s annual gala, held the night before at the Glasshouse. The fund, which awards more than $1 million to young fashion students from diverse backgrounds, honored Anna Wintour and Emma Grede, a founding partner at Skims. Ms. Wintour dedicated her award to Virgil Abloh.
‘To be in the position to lend a hand to the next generation of artists means I’m doing something right.’ — Amy Sherald at the Tribeca Ball.
