Below are all the pictures from last night’s red carpet at the Emmys. People (well, mostly women-people!) did a good job!
The Emmys were thrilling in a couple of ways. There’s nothing more charming than to see Phoebe Waller-Bridge take “Fleabag” from a piece of performance art and turn it into a ragingly good TV show and then win a bunch of awards.
And Billy Porter’s win for best lead actor in a drama series had a notable moment in his speech: He thanked “Bill Butler, my manager of 29 years. Twenty-nine years!” Success doesn’t happen overnight for all of us, so get up and keep at it, friends. (Or, I guess, you could also take a few days off, since it’s a long haul?)
Here’s who won. Here’s context. Here’s the notable fashion. And here’s our slide show.
What was not thrilling about the Emmys, honestly, was the horrible perforated goldenrod backdrop that some deathly committee of people chose for celebrity entrances. Picture a thousand photographers with their eyes bleed-crying!
Nearly everyone looked terrible against this dreaded spread of colors. Ostensibly gold, it read as a dying mustard, a long-wilted lettuce, a spoiled yogurt, a horrid and peeling 1950s paint job, the desiccated summer remains of the fields of central California. It was busy and messy and somehow Zendaya got photographed against purple, where she looked unbelievable.
