Steven Scott Mazzola and Dr. Jeffrey Scott Akman were married Oct. 12 at the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington. Dr. Jehan El-Bayoumi, a friend of the couple and authorized to officiate by the District of Columbia, led the ceremony.
Mr. Mazzola (left) 48, is a senior grants manager at the AARP Foundation in Washington. He has also directed and produced local plays and operas, including “Viva Verdi: The Promised End,’’ which was performed in 2018 at the Source Theater in Washington. He graduated from Vassar College and received his master’s degree in fine arts in dramaturgy from Stony Brook University.
He is a son of Mary Ann Mazzola and Daniel P. Mazzola of Massapequa, N.Y. His mother retired as a clerk typist at the Massapequa Water District. His father is a financial planner at American Portfolios Financial Services in Holbrook, N.Y.
Dr. Akman, 63, a psychiatrist, is the vice president for health affairs and the dean of the School of Medicine and Health Sciences at George Washington University, from which he also received a medical degree. He graduated from Duke.
He is a son of Marion Akman and Alvin Akman of Baltimore. His mother was a stay-at-home parent. His father retired as a vice president of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union and the president of the U.F.C.W. Local 27 in Baltimore. He is also the founder of Alvin Akman Associates, a consulting firm in Baltimore.
The couple met 10 years ago through Facebook.
