Without its visual auteurs, Los Angeles would be bereft of ingénues, actors and leading ladies. On Saturday evening, a bevy of esteemed film directors crowded the Los Angeles County Museum to honor Guillermo del Toro and Catherine Opie at the eight annual LACMA Art & Film Gala, presented by Gucci.
Among the more than 850 attendees were film school favorites like George Lucas, Gus Van Sant, Lee Daniels and Alfonso Cuarón. They were joined by new-guard moviemakers including Damien Chazelle and Cary Fukunaga, who will direct the next James Bond film.
In fact, compared with past galas, directors seemed to outnumber actors. The biggest Hollywood names of the night were arguably Dakota Johnson, Will Ferrell, Jared Leto, Billie Lourd, Zoe Kravitz and Leonardo DiCaprio (a chair of the event).
The museum raised $4.5 million. In his acceptance speech, Mr. del Toro made references to the current immigration climate and spoke of his Mexican race being “vilified.”
But he ended on a high note. “The three things that I think count for existence are love, friendship and art,” he said.
