The stock market may be down, but charities are still raising funds. The Apollo Theater reaped $3.7 million at its spring benefit on Monday, including a $500,000 surprise gift from the night’s honoree, Tyler Perry. Guests, some who wore traditional African garb, enjoyed performances by the Roots, followed by a party down the street.
Also on Monday, Chanel hosted its 15th annual Tribeca Artists dinner at Balthazar that drew a bevy of stars including Penélope Cruz, Whitney Peak and Rebecca Dayan, most of them dressed by the brand. (It was not clear who dressed Robert De Niro, a co-founder of the Tribeca Film Festival, who sat in a back booth.)
And Opening Ceremony and Peter Do celebrated their collaboration on June 2 with a party at Nam Son, a Vietnamese restaurant in Chinatown. There were drag performances, banh mi sandwiches and a high-reaching crowd that included cast members from “Fire Island.”
“I’d like to give a half-million dollars to make sure that this place continues to grow and thrive.” — Tyler Perry at the Apollo Theater.
“I feel like I can do anything after ‘S.N.L.’ My ego has doubled and I have an insane confidence now.” — Michelle Zauner of Japanese Breakfast.
“Celebrating 21 years” of the Tribeca Festival “last night with my favorite TriBeCa filmmaker and red carpet wingman.” — Christy Turlington on Instagram.
