Melissa Brittany Leifer and Max Dylan Bartell were married Dec. 14 by Rabbi Ethan Witkovsky at Temple Emanu-El in Closter, N.J.
The couple graduated from Binghamton University, she summa cum laude with degrees in mathematical sciences and business, and he cum laude.
Mrs. Bartell, 26, is a program associate focusing on organizational sustainability at UJA Federation of New York in Manhattan. She is also pursuing an M.B.A. at Baruch College.
She is a daughter of Randi Smith Leifer and Alan J. Leifer of Suffern, N.Y. The bride’s father retired as an officer in the New York Police Department, where he was a firearms instructor at the police academy’s firearms and tactics section in the Bronx. He now owns a construction company in Suffern. Her mother is a middle school English language arts teacher at Patrick F. Healey Middle School in East Orange, N.J.
Mr. Bartell, 25, works in Manhattan as a law clerk in the litigation department at the law firm Fried Frank. He is on the board of Hillel at Binghamton University, a Jewish on-campus group. He received a law degree cum laude from St. John’s University.
He is the son of Susan Bartell and Lewis A. Bartell of Old Westbury, N.Y. The groom’s mother is based in Port Washington, N.Y., as a clinical psychologist in private practice. Dr. Bartell has written seven self-help books including four on parenting, and writes a monthly online column for parents on children’s health issues for U.S. News & World Report. His father is a lawyer in a private practice in Garden City, N.Y., focusing on counseling small and midsize business owners. He is the vice president for administration on the executive board, and a trustee at Temple Beth Sholom in Roslyn Heights, N.Y.
The couple first met in 2011 as counselors at Ramah Day Camp in Nyack, N.Y., when both were in high school. But they didn’t begin dating until they were living down the hall off-campus from each other while at Binghamton.
