Mayce Mouyad Makani and Andrew Carrol Hevia were married July 5 in San Diego. The Rev. Simon Esshaki performed the ceremony at St. Peter Chaldean Catholic Cathedral.
Mrs. Hevia, 33, is a Spanish teacher at Immaculate Heart High School in Los Angeles. She graduated from the University of California, San Diego, and received a master’s degree in education from N.Y.U.
She is a daughter of Intissar Y. Makani and Mouyad Makani of El Cajon, Calif. Her father is a caterer, with kitchen facilities at the Chaldean cathedral where the wedding took place. Her mother retired as the lead florist at Keil’s, an independent grocery store in San Diego.
Mr. Hevia, 34, is the vice president for film and television in the Los Angeles office of Fabula, a Chilean production company. He was a producer of “Moonlight,” which won the Academy Award for best picture in 2017. In 2015-16, while a Fulbright research fellow in Hong Kong, he filmed a documentary, “Leave the Bus Through the Broken Window,” that premiered at South by Southwest in March. He graduated from Florida State University and received a master’s degree in media entrepreneurship from Fordham.
He is a son of Cecilia A. Hevia and Carlos A. Hevia of Miami. The groom’s mother retired as a teacher in the preschool at Kendall United Methodist Church in Pinecrest, Fla. His father retired as the executive director for capital improvements at Miami-Dade County Public Schools, and is now a management consultant in Miami.
The couple met in 2014 through OkCupid, the dating website, when both lived in New York.
