Matthew John Shuman-Timm and Matthew Thomas Ambler were married Sept. 21 at Christ and St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Norfolk, Va. The Rev. Jess Stribling, an Episcopal priest, officiated with Brian P. Flanagan, a friend of the couple, leading them in their vows.
Mr. Shuman-Timm (left), 30, who goes by Mr. Shuman, is a government marketing manager in Washington at Philips North America, a health care company. From 2008 to 2012 he served in the United States Army based at Fort Huachuca in Sierra Vista, Ariz., as a military police officer and a member of the honor guard. He is on the board of the Independence Fund, a nonprofit organization in Washington dedicated to helping catastrophically wounded veterans. He graduated from Marymount University in Arlington, Va.
He is the son of Paula F. Shuman of Las Vegas, and the late Theresa A. Timm, who lived in Phoenix. Until 2008 Ms. Schuman worked as an administrator in the Myrtle Beach, S.C., office of Lenders Choice, a real estate appraisal and mortgage lending group. Ms. Timm retired as the manager of a gas station and convenience store in Show Low, Ariz.
Mr. Ambler, 28, is a cybersecurity product manager at Capital One, a bank and credit card company in McClean, Va. He sings tenor with Word of Mouth, an a cappella group based in Washington, of which he is also the business manager. He graduated cum laude from Yale.
He is the son of Martha B. Ambler and Thomas W. Ambler of Norfolk, Va. Mr. Ambler’s mother, who retired as a certified public accountant, worked at the Hampton Roads Community Foundation in Norfolk. His father retired as a senior general attorney at the Norfolk Southern Corporation, a railroad company there.
The couple met in 2014 when a mutual friend living with Mr. Ambler invited Mr. Shuman to their housewarming party in Arlington. Four years later Mr. Schuman proposed to Mr. Ambler using an intricate five-part puzzle hunt whose themes included RuPaul, Pokémon, and three-dimensional logic puzzles to be solved by a group of friends, who were in on the plan.
