Marina Rachel Zhavoronkova and Joel Robert Smoot were married May 18 at the Fruitlands Museum in Harvard, Mass. Rabbi David Kudan is to officiate.
The bride, who is 30 and works in Boston, is the assistant secretary for program and performance management for the Massachusetts Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development. She graduated magna cum laude from N.Y.U., and received a master’s degree in public policy from Harvard.
She is the daughter of Dr. Margarita Zhavoronkova and Dr. Ilya Zhavoronkov of Rochester. The bride’s father is an anesthesiologist in private practice in Rochester. Her mother is a physician specializing in sleep medicine, also in private practice in Rochester.
The groom, 32, is an engagement manager for McKinsey & Company in Boston. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and also received a master’s degree in public policy from Harvard.
He is a son of the Rev. Dr. Kristin Frederich of Waunakee, Wis., and The Rev. Dr. Jonathan Smoot of Alexandria, Va. The groom’s mother is a pastor at Cambria Presbyterian Church in Cambria, Wis. His father is the director of Habitat Humanity, a nonprofit housing ministry in Alexandria that helps provide resources for affordable housing. The groom is also a stepson of Mary Hobbie and the Rev. Stephen Bowie.
The couple met at the student activities fair for the Harvard Kennedy School in 2015.
