Luisa Valle and Thomas Joseph Sugrue were married May 6 at the Manhattan Marriage Bureau. Tanya Litochevsky, a staff member of the city clerk’s office, officiated.
Ms. Valle, 47, is a doctoral candidate in art history at the City University of New York Graduate Center, and is also an adjunct professor of architectural history at City College, both in New York. She graduated magna cum laude from the University of Maryland and received two master’s degrees in art history, also from CUNY.
She is the daughter of Patricia Konder Lins e Silva of Rio de Janeiro and the late Hedyl Valle Jr. The bride’s father, a newspaper reporter and a television journalist, was recognized for his coverage of corruption among soccer referees in 1968. Her mother is an owner and the pedagogical director of Escola Parque, a private school in Rio de Janeiro. The bride’s grandfather, Evandro Lins e Silva, was a founder of the Brazilian Socialist Party, and a justice in the Federal Supreme Court until 1969.
Mr. Sugrue, 56, is a professor of social and cultural analysis and of history at N.Y.U. The groom is the author of “The Origins of the Urban Crisis” (Princeton University Press, 1997) and other books. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and in 2013-14 was the president of the Urban History Association and the Social Science History Association. He graduated summa cum laude from Columbia and received a second bachelor’s degree, in history, from Cambridge University in England. He also received a master’s degree in history from Cambridge and a doctoral degree in history from Harvard.
The groom is the son of the late Sharon R. Sugrue and the late Thomas J. Sugrue, who lived in Detroit. The groom’s mother was a stay-at-home parent and had been a nurse at what was then known as Mount Carmel Hospital in Detroit. His father retired from the Custom Sales Company, a manufacturers’ representative for automotive parts suppliers in Huntington Woods, Mich.
The couple met in 2017 through the dating app Coffee Meets Bagel and had their first date in New York.
The bride’s previous marriage ended in divorce, as did the groom’s.
