Last August, Modern Love and The New York Times’s Narrative Projects team invited readers and a few prominent writers to respond to the question: “What is Black love today?”
After sifting through submissions from people around the world, we are delighted to present eight moving first-person essays that illuminate the breadth and depth of contemporary Black relationships.
“Black love is far from a monolithic concept,” Veronica Chambers, the Narrative Projects editor, wrote in her introduction to the project. “These essays tell of heterosexual partnerships, queer love, open relationships, missed connections and the kind of loving familial bonds that often prove to be among the most complex love stories of all.”
In celebration of Black History Month and Valentine’s Day, we hope you will immerse yourself in these powerful stories.
