It’s the first Monday in May, which means that civilization requires that oodles of celebrities assemble in outlandish clothing and, with their terror quite visible, slowly ascend the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art for an unnaturally expensive dinner or perhaps human ritual sacrifice. Why? Because Anna Wintour, the artistic director of Condé Nast and editor of Vogue, compels them to.
But whatever outcome they achieved in their secret rituals — do they keep the moon and/or the stock market up? Are they what keeps James Marsden working? — this year, we must forgo it. For the Met Gala is canceled. (Technically, just “postponed indefinitely.”)
Here, then, for your appetites for celebrity sacrifice, are unpublished photos from last year’s Met Gala preparations. The theme, you may recall, was “camp”! These were all taken at the part where the famous people would leave the hotels where they get dressed and make their way toward that forbidding temple of mystery. Enjoy, or, feel great sorrow, as you view these photos (and more on our Instagram) taken in the alternate reality of just a year ago.
