Kate Aveline Edwards and Joseph Richard Serxner were married Aug. 31 at Tudor Place, an estate in Washington. Jamie Engleman, a friend of the couple who was ordained by the Universal Life Church for the event, officiated.
Ms. Edwards, 34, is a founder and the chief operating officer of Heartbeat, a marketing technology start-up company in Los Angeles. She graduated from Brown and received an M.B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles.
She is a daughter of Beth Yingling and Charles T. Edwards of Falls Church, Va. The bride’s father retired as a real estate broker at Weichert in Vienna, Va. Her mother retired as the chief human resources officer at Apple Federal Credit Union in Fairfax, Va.
Mr. Serxner, 32, who goes by Joey, is a creative copywriter at MediaMonks, a production agency in Los Angeles, writing for clients including Amazon, Google and Unicef. He graduated from Trinity University in San Antonio.
He is the son of Dr. Laura E. Mabie and Dr. Keith E. Serxner of Genoa, Nev. His father retired as a pediatric dentist in private practice in La Cañada Flintridge, Calif. The groom’s mother retired as a pediatrician in private practice in La Cañada Flintridge and is now the owner of the Pioneer Yarn Company, a yarn store in Minden, Nev.
The couple met in 2016 while working at a start-up company called Overnight in Los Angeles. A co-worker arranged a team happy hour at El Chavo, a Mexican restaurant, then persuaded everyone else not to attend, resulting in an impromptu date.
