Johna Renata Paolino and Thomas James Mandel were married Sept. 21 at the Sound River Studios in Long Island City, Queens. Ann Safford Mandel, the groom’s paternal grandmother who became a Universal Life minister for the event, officiated.
Mrs. Mandel, 30, works in Manhattan as a senior product designer at The New York Times, where she was part of the team that launched the 7-Day Love Challenge. She graduated from Yale.
She is the daughter of Paula C. Paolino of Cranston, R.I., and David A. Paolino of East Greenwich, R.I.
Mr. Mandel, also 30, is an associate creative director at Elephant, an advertising agency in Brooklyn. He is also a mentor for the Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City. He graduated from Dartmouth.
He is a son of Susan Z. Mandel and Stephen F. Mandel Jr. of Greenwich, Conn.
The couple met in 2014 through a mutual friend, but did not start dating until 2015. Their first date was at the roller rink in the Brooklyn Bridge Park.
