A year ago, it would have been a bold fashion statement. Now, it’s a political one.
Jenifer Lewis, one of the stars of ABC’s “Black-ish,” showed up to the Emmys red carpet wearing head-to-toe Nike, an outfit that she said was meant to show support for Colin Kaepernick.
Mr. Kaepernick, the former football player whose protest against police brutality during the national anthem of N.F.L. games created a partisan firestorm around the league and around the world, was recently made the face of the sportswear brand’s latest advertising campaign.
Ms. Lewis said that when she was considering what she could wear that would be meaningful (while swimming laps), the brand came to mind.
“Thank you for leading the resistance,” she said, addressing the company. “We need more of corporate America to stand up also. These are not dark times, these are awakening times.”
Prompted by an interviewer, she also thanked Mr. Kaepernick effusively, for being brave and taking a knee.
