It’s that time of year again: the time when most people fail to realize the Emmys are on.
Just kidding! Many people love the Emmys. They are television’s most important awards ceremony. This year, Colin Jost and Michael Che of “Saturday Night Live” will host the show.
There will (hopefully) be enough intrigue to keep you watching the main event for three hours: Will Netflix finally dethrone HBO? “Atlanta” did well at the Golden Globes, but do Emmy voters have the same taste as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association? Will Sandra Oh, who was born in Canada to Korean parents, become the first performer of Asian descent to win an award for lead actress? Can NBC make a Monday-night ceremony work? (MTV, we learned in August, could not.)
Over here we’re focused on the red carpet, where celebrities will file in all dressed up and be asked potentially interesting questions that they may even deign to answer thoughtfully. Monday will mark the first Emmys ceremony since the #MeToo movement took hold in October 2017. With CBS’s former head, Leslie Moonves, having recently stepped down after being accused by multiple women of sexual assault and harassment, it is possible that nominees will take the opportunity to speak more broadly about gender discrimination, and the way it has shaped their experience in the industry.
We’ll be here watching (with you?) and making sure you’re kept up with the latest from Los Angeles. Tune into E! at 6 p.m. Eastern to see the stars arrive.
