The bride, 46, is a digital communications officer at the State Department in Washington, D.C. She graduated from Smith College in Northampton, Mass., and received a master’s degree in English from Western Connecticut State University. She also received a master’s degree in second language Education from the SUNY College at New Paltz, and holds a master’s degree in international education policy from Harvard.
She is the daughter of Judith Hoyt Howland and Arthur H. Howland of South Kent, Conn. The bride’s father retired as a civil engineer and president of an engineering firm bearing his name in New Milford, Conn. Her mother, also retired, was a stay-at-home-parent before becoming an art galley curator and registrar of voters in Kent.
The groom, 54, is an associate professor of surgery at Georgetown University School of Medicine and a senior vascular surgeon at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital. He graduated from Georgetown, from which he also received a medical degree. He also holds an M.B.A. from Johns Hopkins.
He is a son of the late Azar Shafii Akbari and the late Dr. Yussef Akbari of McLean, Va. The groom’s father retired as a general surgeon in Washington, D.C. His mother was a stay-at-home parent.
The groom’s first marriage ended in divorce.
The couple met in 2017 in Washington, D.C.
