Hailey Bieber is no stranger to style. She strikes the perfect balance between sporty and smart, effortlessly pairing Bottega Veneta with sweatpants or oversized parkas with stilettos. Her Bodega Chic aesthetic (which she shares with husband Justin Bieber) makes her one of our top quarantine style stars, and she’s taking her sneaker expertise to the next level as the new global ambassador for Superga. “I genuinely love the brand and everyone I got to work with, so I feel happy to be able to represent them,” Bieber said. “Everything felt organic and a really good fit for me. I love how it turned out!”
Despite lockdown, the supermodel managed stay booked and busy. Alongside her role as the face of the Italian footwear brand, she became ELLE’s April cover star, used her Instagram as a platform for underrepresented voices, and combated anxiety using moves she learned from her husband.
ELLE.com caught up with Bieber over Zoom, where she detailed the intricacies of her personal style, shared her post-pandemic bucket list, and what she wants to tackle next with her activism.
What was it like being on set for Superga after months in lockdown?
It was really nice to be around people who I’ve worked with before but haven’t seen in a very long time. It made me appreciate seeing them so much more. I felt really grateful to be able to work with the team despite the circumstances.
Which pair of Supergas are a closet staple for you?
The classic 275’s are my favorite! I’ll be wearing them a lot, especially when the weather gets warmer.
Do you prefer pearly white sneakers or worn-in ones?
I think it depends on the type of sneaker, but I prefer a worn-in situation. When things look a little worn in, you’ve lived life in them and they have a story behind them. Fresh sneakers give me anxiety trying to keep them clean, but at the end of the day, there’s not a lot you can do.
Your style is very dynamic, but everything you wear is undoubtedly you. Where do you think that comes from?
My style and taste have evolved with time and age. It’s constantly changing, except when it comes to staple items like a big coat or oversized leather jacket—those are things I always love! The cool thing about working in fashion is I get to pick up things from people I meet in that space and I get to see things before they’re out. I see the color schemes, patterns, cuts and shapes that people are going for—that plays a lot into what I end up choosing to fit my style.
Have you discovered a new hobby or activity during lockdown?
I started learning how to play chess! My husband has been teaching me how to play. I’m not very good at it because he wins every time but I’m going to keep working on it to get better.
What’s the best part of your daily routine?
I’ve been limiting my time on Instagram. I just had just find a way to step away from it and do it in a way that felt healthy for me due to the anxiety I would get from seeing certain things. I don’t go on it during the week, so I only check it for the first time at the end of the week and that has helped me so much. I’m really happy about that.
When you get vaccinated, what’s the first thing you want to do?
I’m really dying to travel to Morocco! I’ve never been so when we can all travel safely I would really love to go there. I’m dying to go to Egypt too. That’s another place that I really want to visit.
You’ve been very politically active and outspoken for various causes on social media. What have you enjoyed the most about the takeovers on your Instagram?
Every individual that has done the takeover is so amazing. I love getting to know them and their stories and what they stand for. They’ve really inspired me in so many different ways. We’ve been reaching out to different people in various spaces and seeing if they are interested. I just want to continue being able to give people a platform to educate and the thing that’s been cool is my followers and I have been learning together along the way.
What change would you like to see in the fashion industry in the future?
I would love to see more inclusivity. I believe we’re moving in that direction slowly but surely, but I still think it’s only the bare minimum.
