Fendi’s new direction under Kim Jones is one of classic British elegance infused with traditional Italian craftsmanship. Launching today, the famed atelier is releasing an exclusive capsule based on Jones’ spring-summer 2021 couture collection, his very first show for the house. Neither couture nor ready-to-wear, this limited-edition capsule presents ideas from his debut runway in fabrics and styles that are less rigorous and labor-intensive than its made-to-measure versions.
Jones drew inspiration from the Bloomsbury Group, specifically Virginia Woolf and her classic novel Orlando. Women in the group, including Woolf, shrugged off gender norms of the time and espoused personal liberties and relationships over bourgeois habits of the Victorian era. This led to insouciant dressing in relaxed silhouettes and muted colors.
This studied casualness and nuanced gender dichotomy came to life in the spring couture collection, and carries through with this capsule (both of which casted Bella Hadid as its star). Sharp and sleek tailoring shines with Jones’ now-famous eye for color and cut, contrasted by draping in monochrome silks and satins. Crisp cotton shirting lives alongside cady-silk jackets and dresses that accentuate the decolletage. It’s digestible, wearable, and more saliently, set at a lower price point than couture’s typical offerings.
The drop features a tight edit of accessories, including ballet slippers and knee-high boots adorned with the Karligraphy Fendi logo originated by, you guessed it, Karl Lagerfeld, during his tenure at the brand. For handbags, the Peekaboo and the Baguette are reimagined in pearl-lined and screen-printed editions. Also available is a modern take on baroque jewelry, including pearl drop earrings and cuffs encrusted in rhinestones and set in resin.
Be warned: this collection will not be sold online. Starting on April 15th, the capsule will only be available for two short weeks at nine select Fendi locations worldwide, including Miami Bal Harbour, Beverly Hills, London, Paris, Seoul, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Beijing. This marks Jones’ first Fendi collection to hit stores, so run, don’t walk, if you want your slice of fashion history.
