Before the pandemic, Monica Muzzo Romero, a native of Venezuela, owned Arepa Factory restaurants in the East Village and in the Turnstyle Underground Market at Columbus Circle. Both closed. Now Ms. Muzzo has opened a compact food shop in Brooklyn as a homage to her grandmother Graciela Romero (the store’s logo is a sketch of her). She has stocked the shelves with fine groceries, many of them imported from Europe, like tinned seafood from Gueyu Mar in Spain and Italian Golfera Cotechino. In addition, there’s a menu of well-crafted sandwiches on Balthazar breads, with choices like the Parisian, with cooked ham and Comté cheese; and the Castelfranco, combining Italian prosciutto cotto and truffled mushrooms. Salads and desserts like pistachio tiramisù are made in house.
