Erica Jane Sackin and David Richard Stroup were married March 9 at Republic Restoratives, a distillery and event space in Washington. Seashore R. May, an aunt of the bride, received temporary authorization to officiate from the District of Columbia.
Ms. Sackin, 38, is the senior director of communications and a public spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood Federation of America and Planned Parenthood Action Fund, where she oversees the organization’s communications and media department. She graduated from Goucher College.
She is a daughter of Lucy F. Coolidge of New York and Henry J. Sackin of Highland Park, Ill. The bride’s father is a professor and the vice chair of physiology and biophysics at the Chicago Medical School. Her mother retired as an administrator from Barnard College. She is also a composer who has written songs for various revues and cabarets, including a 2001 revue, “Lighter Than Air,” at Studio 54. She is a stepdaughter of Carol Gildar.
Mr. Stroup, 35, is pursuing a master of fine arts in creative nonfiction writing at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., where he is an instructor in composition and creative writing. Until 2018, he worked as a freelance digital strategist in Washington, and was the digital director for the 2014 election of Senator Mark R. Warner, Democrat of Virginia. The groom graduated from Georgetown.
He is the son of June T. Stroup and Richard H. Stroup of Tinley Park, Ill. The groom’s mother retired as a registered nurse at the University of Chicago Hospital. His father retired as an information technology manager at Simpson Technology, a maker of foundry equipment, in Aurora, Ill.
The groom’s previous marriage ended in divorce.
The couple met on Tinder in September 2016, when the groom inadvertently “super-liked” the bride’s profile, and she swiped “right” after noticing they had 300 friends in common, and also that he looked familiar. A week later they talked politics, music and journalism — first at a coffee shop, and then a bar — and began dating after that conversation.
