Dr. Emily Margaret Hogikyan and Thaddeus Joseph Chatto were married June 1 at the Old St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Detroit. The Most Rev. Bernardito Auza, the Holy See’s Permanent Observer to the United Nations in New York, performed the ceremony.
Dr. Hogikyan, 26, is an incoming pediatrics resident at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. She graduated from the University of Michigan, from which she also received a medical degree.
She is a daughter of Patricia M. Hogikyan and Dr. Norman D. Hogikyan of Ann Arbor, Mich. The bride’s father is a professor of otolaryngology at the University of Michigan. Her mother is a nurse anesthetist at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Chelsea in Chelsea, Michigan.
Mr. Chatto, 27, is a middle school math teacher at the Detroit Edison Public School Academy in Detroit. In October, he is to begin studying for a master’s degree in public policy at the Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago. He graduated from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
He is a son of Marili Z. Chatto and Dr. Eladio M. Chatto of Rosiclare, Ill. The groom’s mother was an oncology nurse at the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, N.Y. before becoming a stay-at-home parent. His father is a physician at Hardin County General Hospital in Rosiclare.
The couple met in 2014 while serving as AmeriCorps members at City Year Chicago, a nonprofit organization in Chicago where they worked as tutors and mentors in Chicago public schools.
