Elizabeth Cecily Paton and James Paul Wise were married June 28 in a civil ceremony at Sibton Park in Suffolk, England. Becci Sharpe, a registrar in Saxmundham for the Suffolk County Council, officiated.
On June 29, the couple took part in a celebration ceremony, also at Sibton Park. Sir Nigel Carrington, the bride’s uncle, led the ceremony.
The bride, 32, is the Styles correspondent in Europe for The New York Times and is based in the London bureau. She has a master’s degree in English literature from Balliol College, Oxford University.
She is a daughter of Julia M. Paton of London and the late Hugh Paton. The bride’s mother is a psychotherapist in private practice in London. Her father was a managing director at JPMorgan Chase, also in London. The bride is also a stepdaughter of John Studzinski of New York. Her stepfather, who works in New York, is a managing director and vice chairman of Pimco, the global investment management firm.
The groom, 33, is a partner in Balderton Capital, a venture capital firm in London, and a founder of the Social Business Trust, a London-based charity. He received a master’s degree in politics, philosophy and economics at Christ Church, Oxford University.
He is the son of Paul Wise of Cheshire, England, and Kay Fitchew, also of Cheshire. The groom’s father owns a car dealership in South Manchester, England, that bears his name. The groom is also the stepson of Jonathan Fitchew.
The couple were introduced at a dinner in New York by a mutual friend in August 2013 when the bride was working as a news reporter for The Financial Times in New York and the groom was based in London.
Despite attending the same university and sharing many friends, they had never met. They soon embarked on a long-distance relationship that became considerably shorter in January 2015, when the bride moved back to London.
The groom proposed in October 2018 on the rooftop of the Ludlow Hotel on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, where their relationship began.
