Eden Marie Maloney and Michael Morris Lyons were married July 13 in Stanford, Calif. The Rev. John H. Harrison, a minister of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, performed the ceremony at Stanford Memorial Church.
The couple met at the University of California, Los Angeles, from which each graduated.
Mrs. Lyons, 29, is a candidate for a doctoral degree in immunology at Stanford, where her research focuses on understanding how infection with the Epstein-Barr virus contributes to the development of various cancers. On July 17, she is to begin as a medical student at Vanderbilt. Until June, she was a volunteer middle and high school science teacher at the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford.
She is the daughter of Patricia M. Maloney of Berkeley, Calif., and of Hubertus E. Paprotna of Stuart, Fla. The bride’s father is a fluid-dynamics engineer in the Jupiter, Fla., office of Siemens, the German company. Her mother is an adjunct professor of critical studies at the Oakland, Calif., campus of the California College of the Arts, and was a founder and the publisher of Art Practical, an arts journal in Berkeley.
The bride is also the stepdaughter of Carol Paprotna, a senior systems analyst in Stuart for the Martin County Board of Commissioners, and of Smith T. Weygant, who provides technical support to clients of Amazon’s web services division in San Francisco.
Mr. Lyons, 27, is studying for a doctoral degree in microbiology and immunology at Stanford, where his research focuses on immune responses to H.I.V., with an emphasis on vaccine design and development. In the 2018-19 academic year, he was the coach of Stanford’s men’s club volleyball team.
He is a son of Monica Lyons and Peter J. Lyons of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. The groom’s mother was a stay-at-home parent. His father retired as an aerospace engineer for Boeing El Segundo, Calif.
