Dwayne Ashley and Daniel Luis Munguia were married Sept. 21 at the Pines Club, a social club in Sayville, N.Y. Judge W. Franc Perry, of the New York State Supreme Court, officiated.
Mr. Ashley (left), 52, is a founder and chief executive of Bridge Philanthropic Consulting, a fund-raising firm in New York. He graduated from Wiley College in Marshall, Tex., and received a master’s degree in government administration from the University of Pennsylvania.
He is a son of Mary Gipson of Houston, and the late Howard L. Ashley Sr., who lived in Dallas. The groom’s mother, who is retired, was the owner of the Max Lounge jazz club and Mary’s Personalized Health Services, both in Houston. He is a stepson of Archie L. Clay of Marksville, La. His stepfather is the owner of a real estate management company in Marksville.
Mr. Munguia, 30, is a senior consultant for Bridge Philanthropic Consulting. He graduated from Cornell and received a master’s degree in education from the Relay Graduate School of Education in New York.
He is a son of Rosana Munguia and Juan B. Munguia of Bay Shore, N.Y. The groom’s mother was a stay-at-home parent. His father is a vintage car restorer at the Blue Ribbon Auto Body and Repair in Bay Shore.
The couple met in April 2015 at a party in New York when Mr. Munguia and Mr. Ashley bumped elbows. The two exchanged smiles and struck up a conversation that lasted all night. Shortly after meeting, the couple embarked on a long-distance relationship as Mr. Ashley would travel from New York to Houston to visit Mr. Munguia, who was a member of Teach for America and a teacher at KIPP Polaris Academy for Boys.
