Like a number of other fast food chains, Nathan’s Famous, known for its hot dogs, has added a vegan option. It entered a partnership with the company Meatless Farm to create a plant-based version of its hot dog. The key to it is Nathan’s proprietary spice blend. (Nathan Handwerker developed his hot dog, made famous on Coney Island, more than 100 years ago.) On its own, the new vegan hot dog lacks snap and succulence, and though the spice comes through, it has a slightly vegetal flavor. But in a classic bun, piled with sauerkraut and slathered with mustard, it passes muster. The vegan hot dog makes its debut Monday online (a package of six plant-based hot dogs with buns and mustard, $49.99) and in the coming weeks at Nathan’s Famous restaurants ($4.99 per hot dog) in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Florida.
