Alcoholic beverages, as they have been woven into the fabric of life in Virginia since the early European settlements, are the subject of a new exhibition at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture in Richmond. Historic details are illustrated by artifacts on display, exploring the need to drink alcoholic beverages because water was unsafe, George Washington’s contribution to American spirits, Prohibition, and modern craft brewing, distilling and winemaking. Among them are George Washington’s fluted drinking glasses, an early 18th century sherry glass, a liquor taxation stamp from 1916, an anti-Prohibition scarf and a 19th century copper still.
