This season, bigger is better, louder is louder, and more is certainly more.
The internet will tell you that fall is cuffing season. (Go on, Google it.) But for the fashion minded, it will always be coat-shopping season. And this year, it’s a particularly exciting one.
Outerwear in slick plaid (at Fendi), in boldly supersize shapes (at Balenciaga) and in puffy leather (at Prada) provided the big, fat exclamation points at the end of each label’s fall 2018 statement on the runway. Bigger was better, louder was louder, and more was certainly more.
A Trench to Swim In
Even the trench, that paragon of classic style, got pumped up this season. The best way to wear one now, it seems, is to be swimming in it. Sizing up not only imbues an ensemble with a certain borrowed-from-the-boys cool, but also provides extra room to pile on the layers.

The Puffer Grows Up
The update on last season’s ubiquitous puffer: Swap a nylon version for one in supple leather. It’s a good deal more sophisticated than its nylon predecessor, but just as warm. It pairs as well with black slacks for the office as it does with your favorite sweatpants and sneakers.

A Not-So-Classic Plaid
The traditional men’s wear print is often treated as a neutral, but there’s nothing low-key about the multicolor, oversize plaids appearing on some of the season’s chicest coats. Pick one in a slightly off-kilter color scheme.

Give It Texture
Playing with texture, with nubby wools and slick patent leather, can make as much of an impact — sometimes more — than an attention-getting color palette. Take that lesson to heart and wear your sensory-pleasing coat with contrasting textures. Think: a velvet duster with denim and patent leather boots, or an iridescent leather jacket with supersoft cords.
