Ann MacMillan Dyer and James Gainer Hiers are to be married Oct. 13. The Rev. Lara K-J Campbell, a Unitarian-Universalist minister, is to officiate at the Morgan Hill Event Center in Hermon, Maine.
Ms. Dyer, 29, is a research and instruction librarian at the Maine Maritime Academy, a public college of engineering, management, science and transportation in Castine, Maine. She graduated from the University of Puget Sound, and received a master’s degree in library and information science from Simmons College. She is also a master’s candidate at the Maine Maritime Academy, in the school’s international logistics management program.
She is the daughter of Kathryn G. Ward and J. Scott Dyer of Pleasantville, N.Y. The bride’s father retired as a senior counsel for labor and employment law at Simpson, Thacher & Bartlett, the New York law firm, and is now an independent flight instructor and a director of the Westchester Aviation Association, which oversees general aviation at the Westchester County Airport in West Harrison, N.Y. Her mother retired as an English teacher at Horace Greeley High School in Chappaqua, N.Y., and is now an independent yoga teacher.
Mr. Hiers, 31, is the drug and alcohol educator at the University of Maine in Orono; he provides counseling and prevention work on substance use to students. He graduated from the University of Texas, San Antonio, and received a master’s degree in community counseling from Gonzaga University.
He is the son of Susan K. Wintels of Watauga, Tenn., and Gainer K. Hiers of Picayune, Miss. The groom’s mother was a stay-at-home parent. His father is a captain for the JAD Group of Warri, Nigeria; he operates a self-propelling, self-elevating vessel that provides service to oil rigs and other shallow-water stations.
The couple met in 2014 through work both were involved in on kindergarten-readiness, in Tacoma, Wash. They began dating a week before she left for the East Coast to begin graduate school. “He came over for mulled wine, which he had never had before, and we spent seven days intensely dating before I moved,” she said. Four months later, he, too moved to the East Coast.
