The spacious former Dean & DeLuca on the Upper East Side has now become a branch of Butterfield Market, a store that has been on Lexington Avenue since 1915. The owners, Evan and Joelle Obsatz, and their father, Alan Obsatz, have added features like a sushi counter, an appetizing department and a pizzeria, which are not in the original. They also opened up the white-tiled space, with fewer counters clogging central aisles, in part to observe social distancing and also for a more expansive look. The new market sells produce, groceries, dairy, baked goods and, soon, meat and seafood. But there is a greater emphasis on prepared food to meet a demand that the owners recognize as having become more necessary with the pandemic. They are also geared up for home delivery.
