A coat or two of lipstick can go a long way in perfecting a wedding-day look.
“Lipsticks are a small, portable piece of beautification that brightens your face instantly,” said Todd Harris, a makeup artist based in New York, adding that new technologies and components “are making the lipstick market huge right now.”
There are a wide variety of choices available, from matte and glossy to hydrating and plumping. Here are some new releases and reliable standbys to consider for your big day — or for every day.
Gimme Gloss

Lip glosses create a look that’s lighter, softer, and shimmery, and they’re perfect for summer wedding ceremonies.
Some of the latest releases also offer added benefits. Saint Jane recently introduced Microdose Lip Gloss, $28, which contains 50 milligrams of pure CBD, or cannabidiol, derived from the cannabis plant, along with chamomile and aloe.
“The mouth is one of the most nerve-rich areas of the body,” said Casey Georgeson, the founder of Saint Jane. “You can calm the lips, and yourself, with ultra-absorbing antioxidants and wellness ingredients, like CBD, as the benefits are delivered quickly.”
Cosmedix’s Lumi Crystal, $35, is a glossy lip hydrator infused with liquid crystal technology that delivers intense moisture. Among the ingredients, portulaca pilosa extract and palmitoyl tripeptide-38 help to reduce fine lines and wrinkles and protect from environmental stressors. And the product’s light-reflecting finish gives you a polished look photos.
Also, Marc Jacobs recently released six new shades in the Enamored Lip Hi-Shine Gloss Lip Lacquer collection to coincide with L.G.B.T.Q. Pride Month. Each of these glosses costs $28 and comes in limited-edition rainbow packaging. From June 6 to July 10, 10 percent of the retail price will be donated to SAGE, an organization that provides support to older L.G.B.T.Q. people.
Red has historically been a coveted and classic color for lips. Designers and celebrities who have moved effortlessly into the beauty arena have each had a standout hero (or best-selling) red.
“When it comes to makeup, especially a lipstick that has a cultlike quality, it lets you connect emotionally to the designer and the brand,” said Tim Quinn, the vice president for creative artistry at Giorgio Armani Beauty. “It also connects you to other women who have worn the same shade, which intensifies and validates the moment you’re experiencing.”
Giorgio Armani’s signature shade of red was inspired by the center of a red rose, and is encapsulated in shade No. 400 in the Rouge D’Armani Matte Lipstick collection, $38.
Among the other popular brands, Christian Dior’s “perfect red” Rouge Dior No. 999, $37, pays homage to two of the original Rouge Dior shades, Nos. 9 and 99, which debuted in 1953. Tom Ford’s Scarlet Rouge, $55, released in 2012, was one of his original colors, delivering an instant dramatic look. Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty features Stunna Lip Paint, $24, a long-wear fluid color that was part of her original collection.
Pat McGrath offers MatteTrance Lipstick in Elson, her signature red, $38; a true crimson with just the right amount of blue undertone, it helps to make teeth appear whiter. Her distinctive packaging features lips protruding from the sleek case.
Plump Your Pout
Forget filler injections, there are products that can create the look of fuller, wider lips minus the pain.
“Lipstick is instant glamour,” said Charlotte Tilbury, a former makeup artist who created her own cosmetics and skin care line.
Over the last five years, she has released more than 90 lip offerings, including Collagen Lip Bath, $35, a plumping lip gloss (with heart shaped applicator) that contains marine collagen, mustard sprout extract and pearlescent pigments.
“This gives you a boost of youth paired with a natural glow and lustrous lip,” Ms. Tilbury said.
Others products worth considering include Too Faced Lip Injection Extreme, $28, an instant lip-plumping clear serum. It uses technology that helps dilate blood vessel, creating volume, and contains collagen. Dr. Brandt’s 3-D Lip Plumpfix, $39, offers morning and evening plumping through a dual applicator. Thanks to hyaluronic filling spheres, peptides, and biomimetic skin rejuvenators, it produces lips that appear fuller, smoother and contoured.
Pamper-Me Packaging
Pretty packaging can add a touch of luxury — and even whimsy — to the makeup process.
Christian Louboutin’s famous red-soles look can be worn on your lips — and now around your neck as a statement piece. Inspired by Middle Eastern antiquities and the Art Deco movement, five new Rouge Velvet Matte Lip Colours, $90, are a nod to his signature hue.
“Lipstick journeys with you,” said Isamaya Ffrench, global makeup artist for Christian Louboutin Beauty, explaining that “Christian Louboutin’s vision is to turn lipstick once hidden in a bag into an exceptional objet d’art, a showpiece.”
“The object is luxurious, elegant and bold,” she said. “It reflects the sensibility of the product inside and how it might make you feel.”
Rouge G de Guerlain offers 12 new semi-matte shades, $33, and eight additional mock-crock and snakeskin colored cases complete with mirror, $22, that can be refilled and swapped.
And Laurice Rahmé, the creator and president of Bond No. 9 New York Fragrances, debuted her Neutral Lips collection. Each of the six shades are named after a Manhattan location — Hudson Yards and Central Park, for example — and are encapsulated in a refillable, metallic gold case that resembles her signature hourglass perfume bottles, $105 and $130.
Smudge-Proof Stainers
“Stains gives you the confidence and reassurance that what is on your lips is not disappearing or bleeding — it’s one less thing you have to think,” said Mr. Harris, the New York makeup artist. “When smudge-proof products first came out,” he said, “they were highly alcohol based and drying. That’s changed with advancements, new emollients and innovative hydrating formulas.”
