A small group of 20-somethings, some of whom are still in college, came up with the idea of this inaugural New York Halal Food Festival on Long Island. Noran Omar, the creative media director of the event, said all of the organizers have immigrant parents and wanted to foster a sense of community among Muslims and other groups. There will be about 50 vendors and special events are scheduled throughout the day, like a hot-dog eating contest and cooking demonstrations.
New York Halal Food Festival, Saturday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., free admission, Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, 1255 Hempstead Turnpike, Uniondale, N.Y., newyorkhalalfoodfestival.com.
