When designers showcased their spring collections last fall, no one knew what 2021 would have in store. Embracing a new world of live stream shows and digital formats, brands met the fashion moment with a much-needed spark of optimism. A happy array of mood-boosting hues, dreamy patterns, and playful silhouettes burst forth on the virtual runways in unanimous testament to the joys of getting dressed. And our favorite designers — both emerging and established — made the case for those shining wardrobe heroes that exude effortless style.
Now as spring arrives, the wait is over, and fashion lovers can finally break out of their winter cocoon. “We see our clients are eager to wear feminine clothing with an element of color, optimism, and exuberance,” says Katherine Greenberg, vice president of apparel at Neiman Marcus. From the easy statement pieces to the next-gen names to know, the Dallas-based retailer has pulled together the ultimate lineup of the season’s most covetable trends. Below are five of the need-to-know (and shop) fashion moments for spring, delivered straight from the source.
Bolder is better when it comes to spring’s statement prints. Designers showed fresh florals, tie-dye touches, and graphic stripes in full force. The best way to wear them? Head-to-toe! “Although we haven’t been dressing up as much, the season’s effortless floral dresses will make women immediately feel chic and put together,” says Greenberg.
When it comes to effortlessly chic style, there’s nothing better than a knit. From slinky, second-skin dresses to delicate artistic details, designers satisfied our craving for comfort with a new crop of light and easy styles. According to Greenberg, this is one seasonal trend with some serious staying power.
Say goodbye to borrowed from the boys. With scaled-up proportions, elegant tailoring, and feminine flourishes, menswear classics got an ultra-chic update for spring. “From oversized silhouettes to dramatic details and sleeves, this is an easy addition to your closet,” notes Greenberg.
Athletic influences were everywhere this spring, and designers dialed up the team spirit style in uniform dressing and statement sneakers. “As we are coming out of a year of being at home, designers have realized women want getting dressed to be simplified,” says Greenberg, adding that “an easy way to achieve this is to go with a matched set. Wear it together with little thought, or break it apart and wear it many different ways.” However you style it, the good news is you don’t have to bid farewell to spandex and elastic just yet.
Party people can look forward to some truly incredible shine this season. Designers decked out spring staples with metallic touches that were simply too good to resist. “I’m excited to see people invest in emotional, glamorous pieces that they feel they can’t live without!” says Greenberg. “A great piece can completely change your attitude and create such joyful moments of self-expression and individuality.”
