Keeping calm in a world that’s busy is a key factor for success for anyone, in any profession. This time of the year in style capitols around the globe—New York, London, Milan, and Paris—you’re almost guaranteed to find a whole pack of fashion people who are stressed out, sleep deprived, and probably not drinking enough water.

“My fashion week is a mixed bag each season: shows, presentations, parties, meetings with designers and PR showrooms, and supporting my fellow content creators at the events they may be hosting—each day is a little different,” blogger Krystal Bick told us in the Sorel suite of our ELLE.com fashion week lounge.
That varied schedule also means she’s always on the move, making her choice of shoes very important.
“Gone are the days of a central show location hub. With shows spread out across uptown and downtown, it’s important to find a fashion-forward shoe that works the whole day. I’m a huge fan of Sorel’s white boots for this season. They’re on-trend with an all-white look or the print of the moment, leopard, and incredibly easy to hop between subway stations to your next runway show seat in.”
Impressed by her very busy schedule, we asked for her top learnings on staying sane when you’re so busy you could scream.
1. Don’t be afraid to make a gut call in the thick of things.
A stitch in time does save nine, but stitching isn’t the only way to make a sweater. Pre-plan what you can, but don’t think everything has to be tied up before you get busy. Plenty of choices can be made in the moment.
“I fly by the seat of my pants, really,” Bick admitted when we asked whether she tries to be super buttoned-up with her outfits before the week kicks off. “Don’t get me wrong, I love spending a few days leading up to it to prepare, shop a bit, and research, but my biggest source of inspiration is seeing how all my fellow show attendees put together their looks and incorporate the trends for the season,” she says. “It gives me new perspective on my own wardrobe—and reminds me how fun it is to play dress up in my own closet.”

2. Don’t skimp on sleep.
If a travel schedule, pressing obligations, or a time period with a lot of due dates means you’ll be burning the midnight oil, don’t just kiss the idea of sleep goodbye. Copy Bick and organize yourself so that you can get rest before things kick off.
“The biggest thing I’ve learned to incorporate into my prep before the storm that is NYFW hits is: Get more sleep. Inevitably, each season my schedule goes a bit haywire, and I find myself getting up each morning around 6am to meet deadlines, write blog posts, and edit photos before heading out for a long day of shows and events,” she explains. “Before I know it, dinner rolls around, and I’m not in bed until midnight or 1am. As someone who values her beauty sleep, I can’t stress the importance of getting caught up before fashion week.”
3. Don’t forget to stop a second and look up.
Hopefully, whatever’s got you so busy is something, at some point, you dreamed of doing or wanted so. very. badly. Keep that in mind even when you’re slammed and running from point A to point B.
For Bick, that means taking a second to remember that while she might be stressed, hello—it’s still fashion week.
“That feeling once the lights dim before a show and the music starts to pump as the first model walks out on the runway is one that I wouldn’t trade for the world. It still gets me giddy each time and reminds me how much I love what I do for a living.”
