Tonic water and soda water can easily outfit the bar when fizz is required. But a new collection of juice-based soft drinks, designed as cocktail mixers, is worth adding to the setup. Avec, a Brooklyn-based company, was created by Alex Doman, an English food and beverage consultant, and Denetrias Charlemagne, an advertising executive, with the goal of keeping sugar low and ingredients pure and simple. There are five soda flavors: grapefruit and pomelo, with black pepper, vanilla and smoked salt; ginger, with pineapple and lime juices, agave, molasses and allspice; yuzu and lime, with lemongrass; jalapeƱo and blood orange, with calamansi, lime and smoked salt; and hibiscus and pomegranate, with lime and cinnamon. Tequila, gin and vodka are the most compatible with the sodas.
Avec, $20 for a six-pack of 8-ounce cans, avecdrinks.com.
