1940s: Zoot Suit
The zoot suit is perhaps the only style to have caused an actual riot. In 1943, white American serviceman inflicted violence on African American, Mexican American, and Filipino American youths, claiming that their attire was unpatriotic, reasoning that the amount of fabric used bucked the rationing of materials during WWII.
