Alexandria, Va., USA – The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) announced Lauren Katz, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA, as the 2021 recipient of the IADR Osteology Foundation New Investigator Award in Oral Tissue Regeneration. Katz was recognized during the Opening Ceremonies of the virtual 99th General Session & Exhibition of the IADR, held in conjunction with the 50th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) and the 45th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research (CADR), on July 21-24, 2021.
Katz is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA, where she also received her D.D.S., certificate in prosthodontics and Ph.D. in oral and craniofacial biomedicine. Her background in the oral and craniofacial health sciences stems from her involvement in both the biomedical research and clinical care components of dentistry and her research interests include the treatment of patients with congenital and acquired craniofacial defects.
Katz’s current work is directed at characterizing the regenerative potential of craniofacial skeletal muscle and its resident stem cells with the ultimate goal of developing therapeutic options to treat craniofacial volumetric muscle loss secondary to developmental anomalies or tumor resections. The objective of her proposed study, “The Role of Periostin in Craniofacial Skeletal Muscle Regeneration,” is to characterize the molecular mechanisms surrounding the regenerative program of craniofacial skeletal muscle and its resident stem cells, the satellite cells.
Now in its second year, the IADR Osteology Foundation New Investigator Award in Oral Tissue Regeneration is jointly sponsored by the IADR and the Osteology Foundation, with funding provided exclusively by the Osteology Foundation. Funding research into all aspects of oral tissue regeneration is a core task of the Osteology Foundation. Katz will receive up to $75,000 USD.
