Highlights from the red carpet:
Ava DuVernay brought the Central Park Five as her dates.
The director Ava DuVernay brought the Central Park Five as her dates. The real life stories of Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana and Korey Wise — who were wrongfully convicted of assaulting and raping a woman in Central Park in 1989 — inspired her Netflix mini-series “When They See Us,” which is up for 16 awards. On the red carpet, Mr. Salaam said: “I think it was the most important thing for us to see each other’s stories because we hadn’t even talked about this.”
“We never spoke about what our experiences were like,” he added.
Giuliana Rancic, of E!, truly impressed Ms. DuVernay when she addressed each of the men by name. It’s not always clear whether the red carpet hosts have seen the nominated material, but Ms. Rancic cited specific moments in the mini-series and could not recommend it highly enough. “If you haven’t seen it, see it,” she said.
Laverne Cox also used the red carpet as a platform, for L.G.B.T.Q. rights.
The “Orange Is the New Black” star Laverne Cox brought Chase Strangio, a staff attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union, as her date tonight. He spoke about a case that the Supreme Court will review on Oct. 8, which could change workplace protections for L.G.B.T.Q. people under Title VII. “Our lives are really on the line,” he said.
Kim Kardashian West and Kendall Jenner reflected on their beginnings.
When “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” first aired in 2007, Giuliana Rancic said, there wasn’t a reality TV category. She was wrong — reality has been in the running since the early 2000s — but anyway, tonight Kim Kardashian West and Kendall Jenner are presenting that award. The three women reminisced about its first season. “I was in school, we were all pretty young,” Ms. Jenner recalled. “A lot of the kids weren’t watching it. But I remember having a really positive association with it.”
“It didn’t change my life as much as you thought it would,” she added.
“Everyone was super chill,” Ms. Kardashian West said.
Niecy Nash said she asked to be cast in “When They See Us.”
Niecy Nash is nominated tonight for her leading role in “When They See Us,” the story of the exonerated Central Park Five. She arrived in custom Siriano, which was very sparkly! Adjusting her cleavage, she said: “Trying to keep it all in but if it falls out you’re welcome!”
How did she convince Ava DuVernay to give her the role in “When They See Us”? By sliding into her DMs, of course. “I had to do that because she doesn’t have an answering machine on her phone,” Ms. Nash said.
Christina Applegate is getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
And she is excited. “I was a little girl walking up and down those streets, destitute — no, I wasn’t! But I always thought as a little girl I would like to have that. So that’s my giddy little kid moment,” she said.
The show she currently stars in, “Dead To Me,” has been renewed for a second season. How will it be? “It is insane. It’s even more insane. We start work tomorrow.”
Ms. Applegate said she is wearing a Vera Wang “custom special dress.” Hmm? “It’s been a process,” she said.
Billy Porter obviously looked great.
Billy Porter, who is nominated tonight for his role as Pray Tell in “Pose,” brought a bit of yeehaw culture to the Emmys red carpet in an asymmetrical, bedazzled cowboy hat and a sparkly pinstripe suit, with Rick Owens platform shoes. “I have always loved fashion,” he said. “I don’t know that ‘fashion icon’ was in the lexicon, but if people are saying that about me, I’m fine with it.”
Jameela Jamil cried on the last day of shooting “The Good Place.”
Jameela Jamil talked about the last day of shooting “The Good Place”: “I cried my face off, and I never thought I would, because I’m English, so I’m dead and cold inside.”
She’s now working with the celebrity stylist Law Roach, who is known for having worked with Ariana Grande, Tiffany Haddish and Zendaya. But unlike most people on the red carpet, she did her own makeup. (“I did do my own today! I’ve been sweating like a criminal for hours,” she said.)
She also does a lot of her own makeup on “The Good Place,” she said, because the show was having women come in to shoot before dawn. “I said halfway through season 1 that the girls were getting in at like 4:45 in the mornings, I realized we had an hour and 45 minutes in hair and makeup. I was like, ‘How ugly do you think I am?’”
Billy Bush is apparently no longer canceled.
Billy Bush is back on the red carpet tonight, doing interviews for Extra. Mr. Bush has been out of the spotlight since the fall of 2016, after audio footage from behind the scenes of “Access Hollywood” leaked that caught him laughing while Donald Trump boasted about grabbing women “by the pussy.” Mr. Bush lost his job as the host of NBC’s “Today” show shortly thereafter.
