If you thought baseball caps, baggy jeans, and well-worn moto boots weren’t high fashion, think again. Like many designers in this mid-pandemic season, Hedi Slimane of Celine released their fall-winter 2021 collection in digital format today, operating on their own fashion calendar. As the show notes say, Celine’s world is a “utopian parade and melancholic daydream of youth interrupted.”
The youthfulness is palpable, but this is not the TikTok archetype. Set to an original soundtrack by Regina Demina, the models (and a harpist set adrift in the middle of a fountain), walk along the André le Nôtre Gardens the Chateau de Vaux-Le-Vicomte, just outside of Paris. We see Kaia Gerber doppelgangers, a familiar fan of the brand, in her uniform of a blazer, crop top, jeans, and sneakers. Hailey Bieber’s deft effortlessness also makes an appearance in the form of weathered hats and gray hoodies styled under oversized coats The standout look, a leather moto jacket paired with a dramatically domed skirt, offers a subtle reminder that we’re witnessing a runway, not a paparazzi crawl.

It’s a wearable runway to a T, exposing us to the gaps that exist in our current wardrobes. Tweed blazers and easy slacks hang with ease, just the way we picture them in our dream outfits. Accessories are unfussy, with tortoiseshell sunglasses silhouetted to perfection and an introduction to two new bags to the Celine roster, the Romy and Tabou.
The show notes wax poetic, literally, specifically citing Arthur Rimbaud’s work ‘Parade,’ quoting: “I alone have the key to this savage parade.” Savage this collection is not, but these times have been. It’s easy in its execution, amiable to wearers and customers whose style understandably softened with the times. The show is missing the glitz and glam of fashion’s yesteryear, but so is life itself. Celine’s collection speaks more to our current needs than a ballgown ever could anyway.
