Fashion’s biggest night is here—even if it was delayed from May to September due to COVID-19. That’s right, folks: the Met Gala’s red carpet has officially begun. Although the crowd might be smaller than past years due to the pandemic, the A-listers in attendance went all out for the night’s “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” theme. Here’s what everyone wore to the ritzy fashion event capping off New York Fashion Week.
What does the American theme mean, you ask? Andrew Bolton, the curator in charge of the Costume Institute that hosts the Met Gala, explained the two-part exhibit as the following in a statement. Part One debuts tonight.
“Over the past year, because of the pandemic, the connections to our homes have become more emotional, as have those to our clothes,” Bolton said. “For American fashion, this has meant an increased emphasis on sentiment over practicality. Responding to this shift, Part One of the exhibition will establish a modern vocabulary of American fashion based on the expressive qualities of clothing as well as deeper associations with issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion. Part Two will further investigate the evolving language of American fashion through a series of collaborations with American film directors who will visualize the unfinished stories inherent in The Met’s period rooms.”
