Wine and Sotheby’s brings to mind rare, top-of-the-line collections up for auction. But that doesn’t apply to the auction house’s new line of wines bearing its own label and sold in its wine shop and online. It sells 12 wines, each a well-crafted, almost textbook example of a particular varietal, category and region, without suggesting great age-worthy distinction. They are for dinner, not special occasions, and priced from $16.95 to $39.95. Sotheby’s wine experts, led by Jamie Ritchie, the company’s wine chairman, contacted producers with whom they were familiar and arranged to have some of their wines bottled with the Sotheby’s label. There’s blanc de blancs grand cru Champagne, Prosecco, Sancerre Blanc 2018, Bourgogne Blanc 2016, Sonoma chardonnay 2018, Sancerre rosé 2018, Langhe nebbiolo 2017, Sonoma pinot noir 2017, Bourgogne Rouge 2016, St. Émilion 2017, Pessac-Léognan 2017 and Haut Médoc 2010.
