Everlane’s Perfect New Puffer Jacket Is Made From Plastic Bottles

There is an island of trash in our oceans that is twice the size of Texas. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch (the official name for it) is growing every day.

Humans have created over 8 billion tons of plastic. 400 million of that was created this year alone. Plastic is being tossed in landfills, polluting oceans, and destroying our planet. Everlane, a company that has always committed to being socially and environmentally conscious, wants to change that.

“We need to start saying no to companies that are not pushing sustainability forward,” says Everlane founder Michael Preysman. To address the global plastics crisis, the brand will stop creating new plastic and use what is already here. The company pledged to eliminate all virgin plastic from their entire supply chain by 2021, meaning no more wasteful shipping bags. The Renew collection, which drops this week, represents the first step toward that commitment. “Any brand that’s not thinking this way, is putting profit ahead of people.”

“With the ReNew collection, we are able to use plastic that would stay on the planet forever and renew it to create products that are as incredibly warm, sustainable and affordable.” Consisting of 13 classic cold-weather styles for both men and women, the first ReNew collection will be made from 3 million recycled plastic bottles. “Our hope is that people wear our jackets and fleece for decades to come,” says Preysman.

And since this is Everlane, a brand that has consistently offered chic, easy-to-wear staples, the collection looks great too. There are sleek parkas, cozy fleece sweaters, and a mustard puffer you’ll want to sleep in. And there’s more to come. Over time, Everlane plans to produce additional ReNew collections, with plans to recycle 100 million plastic bottles within five years.

“Our growth means that each year, our impact on the environment is greater and greater,” Preysman says. “We knew we had to play our part in improving the planet for ourselves and our customers.” Since the brand was founded in 2011, the San Francisco-based company rolled out new changes to their business to address varying concerns. In 2017 they launched their denim collection, which is produced in a factory that recycles 98% of the water, which also happens to include be the perfect crop jean. Earlier this year they announced plans to revamp their silk collection, starting with toxic-free dyes.
